RAILWAY SLEEPER PRODUCTS AND INFORMATION

Railway sleepers are recycled timbers removed from the railway lines as they are upgraded and at times removing lines from use. They are increasingly becoming harder to source as they remove timber sleepers and replace them with concrete ones. As a guide, they are graded by their quality of timber, straight sides & cracking etc.

The quantities and grades of sleepers we keep in our yards can change depending upon supply.

Majority of sleepers we source come in the following dimensions of 225mm (face) x 125mm (thick) and lengths of 2100mm and 2400mm.

A Grade

A Grade Railway Sleepers are a used sleeper in very good condition. It will have bolt holes where the tracks were attached to it and a small amount of damage or slight wane is acceptable to one edge. It is very sound, free from rot and can be used for stacking, building retaining walls and many other uses where a clean straight edged appearance is essential. These high quality hardwood sleepers are also ‘nice and square’ with 2-3 good sides with minimal cracking. Excellent for all purpose use, feature timbers, garden retaining walls or for landscape usage with a straight edge.

B Grade

B Grade  Railway Sleepers are also a used sleeper with all the same characteristics of the Grade A above but can have slight damage to one side and perhaps a small amount of rot to the underside where it has laid on the ground under the tracks for decades. It should have at least two good straight edges so can also be stacked and used to build retaining walls etc. A good solid hardwood sleeper with a minor defect on its face or side, generally 1-2 good sides with some cracking. Very good for all purpose use, retaining walls, vegetable beds or other landscape uses.

C Grade

C Grade Railway Sleepers have all the characteristics of the above grades but can have more serious damage to most sides. A larger amount of rot to the underside is allowable however a grade C sleeper will always have one good face. It can be used to edge driveways, stand portable buildings or containers on or a plethora of other uses. An older sleeper, more rustic but still full length. Mostly used for garden bordering or rustic feature timbers.
